Tips for Applying to Jobs Online
When applying for jobs online it is a great idea to know as much as you can about the company you wish to work for, and to think about what some of that company’s priorities may be for hiring. It is also highly recommended that you apply directly at the company’s website, if possible, and upload a resume and cover letter. There are great tips for successfully applying to jobs online.
Tip one: Find out about the company you want to work for. If they have employee profiles available, visit them and find out what skills the company’s employees have that the company advertises to the public. These are the skills they will want in new applicants and in all employees. Also, know what the primary clientele for the company are like. All of this can be found on the website before applying. Most companies build websites for their clients and investors, because of this, a wealth of information can be obtained from them. Spend time finding out what a company is seeking to provide for clients, and what the company wants its overall image to be; the best thing you can do on an application is try very hard to fit this image.
Tip Two: If possible, go directly to the company’s website to fill out and submit an application. Some companies will want you to submit your application to a third party, but many will have a job application online and wish for you to use it. Some companies do not even have printout applications at their facilities and ask that all job enquiries be submitted by internet. This means that today’s job seekers need to be comfortable filling out and submitting online applications and navigating company websites for job availability. If you are nervous about online applications, go to websites of companies you don’t want to work for and practice filling out online applications through them, this way you can get practice and become more comfortable with the process.
Tip three: Upload a resume. Submitting a resume along with your online application, no matter the job, will greatly improve your chances. Build a strong resume and a cover letter to save as one file. Make sure you proofread your resume several times. While having a resume gives you an incredible edge in some fields, a poor resume will destroy your chances. It should also be noted that some jobs will require a resume along with an application. In this case, just because you are submitting a resume with work experience and education already on it, it does not mean that you don’t need to discuss these things in detail on your online application. Be consistent between application and resume, and be thorough when answering questions on your application. Never say, “see resume.”
Follow these tips and keep a positive attitude during your job search. It can take several application attempts and resume submissions before an applicant finds a company that is looking for the skills and experience that a particular applicant has to offer.
