As the name suggests, home health aids provide help to the people who had been suffering from any ailment and were in the hospital or nursing home and now have come back home. These caregivers are divided as per their services to the children, to the recovering patients, or to the old people. It is not possible to hire nurses from hospitals to do this job mainly for the high expense in hiring them and for their time constraint. Home Health aid givers will be mainly working from the home of the ailing and perform rotational shifts. They can either prefer a night shift starting from eight in the night till eight in the morning, or a day shift from eight in the evening to eight in the evening.

The duties of a caregiver will include not only the medical work but also providing psychological support and care. As a routine they have to take the pulse reading of the patient and also the breathing pattern, doing the dressing of a wound in a fresh manner and administering medicines from time to time. According to the specialization that you opt to study while doing your course in care-giving or that of a home health provider you will have to perform your duties. For example if you are a specialist in the section of burn patients then you will have to perform a much more laboriously job. While that of old patients may entail you to assist in the regular activities of your patients like that of going to the bathroom, moving around in the room and also in dressing and having food.
Working as a home health aid for the old and the differently-able people is challenging. You will require loads of patience to handle the scenario and you cannot possibly loose your composure in such cases.
How to Become a Home Health Aid:
Having a degree from high School or an equivalent in Diploma qualifies you to pursue a course in home health aid. In some states even after you complete the course you may to take another exam to pass the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) level. You will also need to have an identity and address proof in the form of a up to date driver’s license and other such documents. In the beginning you will be working as an assistant to a senior nurse, once trained you will start on your own with any home aid providing agency. There is a possibility of finding full time as well as part time employment in this profession.
With the increase in the healthcare industry in terms of scope and the number of services on offer, the career of a caregiver or that of a home health aid provider is quite promising. Although you will require a strong dose of patience and nerves of steel to deal with some emergency conditions, you will fare well when you love the profession and want to be a part of it.
